Nineties’ ghetto star Nico Gravity has returned to the scene in a rather dramatic manner. The Ajegunle-bred act, who reigned briefly as a promising star from the early to mid-nineties, before seeing his star dim prematurely, has released a new single that might get us all talking about him again.
Titled ‘I wan answer Timaya’, the cut, presently enjoying considerable airplay on radio, lashes out at pop star Timaya, criticising his style and condemning his braggadocio.
Using a musical style similar to Timaya’s, Gravity tells the singer to ‘‘stop bragging, stop all these talk of marijuana and buying cars. No act reigns forever. I hope you are investing’’.
Timaya is a Bayelsan act who gained prominence after his hit single ‘dem mama’ touched the hearts of millions who were directy or indirectly traumatized by the Odi massacre. But most of his other songs reek of arrogance, insecurity, obsession, non-chalance and braggadocio. Musically and lyrically, his style is a lesson in monotony. His themes, very narrow and predictable: Empress Njamah, Marijuana, ‘Bad Belle people’ ‘olofofo’, Dem mama, personal acquisitions, and everything else within that domain.
Timaya’s lines are so lame, they’re annoying; his lyrics fail the test; and critics continue to insist, that his talent is questionable – shortcomings Nico Gravity is also guilty of
But, unlike Gravity who collapsed under the weight of critical and commercial condemnation, Timaya continues to amass fans anyway. He continues to win awards and pack concert halls. And, in spite of all the negatives surrounding him (including attacking photo-reporters, stripping on stage, and infamously placing the hiphopworld awards headie on his crotch as a ‘dedication’ to girlfriend Empress Njamah), he continues to be one of the most important collaborators in the music scene today. He’s been part of almost every major hit since last year, and he stamps his signature forcefully on any joint he spits on. Together with Terry G and K-Solo, he’s pulling the industry in one direction, while the likes of Cobhams, Darey, Asa and 9ice are pulling it in another.
Now, he may need to pause for a minute and listen to what Nico Gravity is saying. With it sound like the voice of a failed act, desperately seeking attention again? Or like the wise counsel of someone who’s been through the road before?
‘‘No musician dey reign forever’’, Gravity announces, mentioning names; while also mentioning some of timaya’s colleagues who, according to him, have not allowed success ‘‘get into their heads’’.

The entertainment industry is not a political terrain. No musician is voted for or elected to be a musician. Its a natural thing. Its a talent. Its not bought.
