New Year Surprise: Yobo Weds ex-Beauty Queen

Everton football star Joseph Yobo was determined not to enter the new year a bachelor.

So, when he went to church for the watch-night service on December 31, he dragged his fiancée along – and they both exchanged wedding vows in the presence of few family members and fellow parishioners.

Yobo, 29, who’s a defender and assistant captain with Nigeria’s national football team Super Eagles, reportedly tied the knots with his young lover – model Adaeze Chinenye Igwe at the Evangelical Bible Outreach Ministries International (EBOMI) in Jos, Plateau State in the early hours of New Year day.

Yobo’s bride, Adaeze, 19, is a former beauty queen who’s now studying at the New York Film Academy. She was named Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria in a pageant organised by Silverbird Communications, on March 28, 2008; taking over the crown form Miss Munachi Abii who won in 2007.

Miss Igwe edited her facebook profile, Saturday, changing her status from ‘engaged’ to ‘married’; and adding ‘Yobo’ to her surname. The comments started flowing in immediately, with many congratulating her while expressing surprise at what appeared to be an overnight secret wedding.

Adaeze was yet to respond to NET enquiries as at the time of filing this report. And it’s uncertain if she’s still in the country. But multiple sources, including Nigeria’s Guardian and THISDAY newspapers confirm the couple indeed exchanged vows on New Year day.

But a honeymoon, it appears, will be off the young couple’s agenda for now. Yobo flew out Sunday, to join his teammates in Durban, South Africa, in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations starting in Angola this weekend.

Yobo missed Nigeria’s friendly match against a South African club Thanda Royal Zulu last Sunday, because ‘he arrived late to camp’, according to a source.
