Label Wages ‘War’ Against Chuddy K

All is not well between singer Chuddy K and his record label.

The vocally gifted 25 year old who took the nation by surprise in 2009 with the release of his debut single ‘‘slow slow’’ is not having the best of times with his label Beta Tunez records.

It is nearing two years since the singer’s highly successful single ‘‘slow slow’’ dominated the airwaves, with ladies swooning over him and fans comparing him with former group mate Wande Coal. While some said Chuddy K was a copy- cat version of Wande Coal, others acknowledged his vocal talent but sadly, the singer has failed to live up to expectations and the ‘‘flash in a pan’’ tag now hovers above his head.

Chuddy K was formerly signed to Satty records before pitching his tent with Beta Records in 2009. He had been working with Adekeye Adeniyi the C.E.O of Beta Tunez before they signed an official deal.

However, the deal which is meant to last till 2012 is experiencing cracks and like a poorly built house, the cracks could well tear the house down.

‘‘It is simple, Chuddy K has two contracts with Beta records. One is a management contract and the other is a promotion contract in terms of publicity, promotion and other things.  Chuddy K was discovered by us and we got him to where he is today’’ Adekeye tells NET in an interview.

‘‘In August last year, I was ill and admitted at the hospital for three months. Before I came out, Chuddy K had breached his contract; he was recording songs with artistes without our knowledge, going to shows to perform with artistes without our consent. It is from that angle that rumors started coming out that some other people have signed him’’.

‘‘The press release dated Monday March 15, 2010 is just a disclaimer that Chuddy K is still an artiste under Beta Tunez record label. I don’t have a problem with him wanting to move to other places as far as everything is done judiciously.

The rumor is not something affirmative.  You know in every working relationship, there are ups and downs but Chuddy K doesn’t want to see it from a business angle. He feels I am stopping him from going to other places where they can give him a better package than I give him’’.

‘‘We are still trying to find out the name of the label and Chuddy K is not granting interviews on the issue for now. I don’t want  different things to start going around. It can affect his career.’’

We could not reach Chuddy K for comments.

If one is to chronicle the ever- growing list of dissatisfied artists and the many mushroom record labels in Nigeria, the list could indeed be endless; Question mark  Vs Street Monks , Asa vs Question mark, Colossal vs Soul E, Rugged man vs Little Fish and most recently, Kel vs Capital Hill.

From the look of things, it may not be long before Mr. K finds the exit doors at Beta Tunez records…
